3 invalid excuses for not helping to save the world…

There’s so many excuses as to why we can’t do more to save the planet. You name it and I bet we’re all guilty of having thought that at some stage saving the planet was just a little bit too much effort. But here’s 3 excuses that are definitely invalid and which you need to challenge if you’re going to help make this world a more liveable place (for the forests and the seas not just us humans).

  1. I don’t have enough time: It takes time to plant a tree or source out biodegradable coffee pods but you know who else is running out of time? The earth! It’s said that anything worth doing is worth doing properly. Set yourself small goals such as an hour a week to reflect on your sustainability practices. In this hour you could simply make a list or do some internet research or you can be proactive and take your food scraps to the local worm farm (I hear Yarra Plenty Library have a good one!). Instead of thinking of saving the planet as one big time consuming effort, break it down into smaller, more achievable time frames.

2. It costs too much money: Buying sustainable products can be expensive but think of how that Keep Cup is helping to save the 50 000 takeaway coffee cups that Australians throw away every half hour, as Rebecca Prince-Ruiz highlights in her book Plastic free. And it’s not all about buying into the lifestyle. There are ways you can save money and be more sustainable. Try using all the ingredients in your fridge. According to Natalie Fee in How to save the world for free each year 1/3 of food produced around the world is wasted. See? You can save money and save the planet!

3. What’s the point? We’re all doomed any way! This is actually the hardest to argue with but TV shows like the War on Waste and Fight for Planet A are proving that little differences we make to our lifestyles can make a big difference for planet earth. So walk instead of drive, take shorter showers or start eating a vegetarian diet. There are so many small changes you can make that really do lead to lower carbon emissions and help save the planet for good. We have to believe we can make a difference.

That’s three invalid excuses and there are many more. The truth is the only way to help undo the mess we’ve made of this planet is to take action for ourselves. Our excuses are invalid. Now is the time to act!
